the BANDS

It occurs to us that we're a little behind in updating the band bios. Bear with us and check back soon...

ie: [ The Applejuice Orchestra | Bellafea | The Cherry Valence | The Greatest Hits | The Loners | My Code Name Is Blue | Proof | The Rosebuds | Ryan Pound | Strange | Utah! | The Weather ]

The Applejuice Orchestra

appearing on: pe2

elsewhere: http://www.applejuiceorchestra.com/

The Applejuice Orchestra is the living breathing soundtrack to a foreign futuristic movie that was filmed but never completed in the summer of 1966. If you ever felt like dropping acid with Bjork and Portishead while cruising the milky way in a two tone, electro funk, flying saucer, the AJO is the band for you. Despite a lineup change here and there, the Applejuice Orchestra are still making the compelling, eerie electro that persuaded us to put out their first 7". The combination of live instrumentation, vamp vocals and electronic flourish are what keep the AJO at the top of their game. This is the place to be if you are looking for sexy, spaceage jams.

Bellafea

appearing on: pe8

elsewhere: http://www.bellafea.com/

Bellafea is a two-piece - based originally out of Wilmington, NC, now in Chapel Hill - whose sparse sound resists definition. Preferring a spartan lineup, their music illustrates the barrenness as well as the hope of existence. heady and challenging; Bellafea brings its music from the inside out at its rawest, tenderest point. In addition to their upcoming EP with PE, Bellafea has a split 7" with Des_Ark coming out soon on exotic fever records.

The Cherry Valence

appearing on: pe4

elsewhere: http://www.thecherryvalence.com/

Everybody's favorite home town riff rock bad asses. The Cherry Valence is not only the hardest working band in America, they are the hardest rocking! One of the best live shows you could ever hope to witness, these kids will fuck your eardrums with dueling drums, burning frets, and vocals that remind you of a time where rock wasn't afraid to show off. The Cherry Valence is the best at what they do and we are honored to have them start off Pidgeon English's first cd comp. Hell Yeah!

The Greatest Hits

appearing on: pe4

elsewhere: http://www.thegreatesthits.org/

What with all the girl trouble, young angst and ....well...drinking, the Hits might just be the south's answer to the Replacements. You better believe that this Raleigh four piece can crank out rock tunes that will leave Paul Westerburg and Ronnie Van Zandt playing grab ass with some misguided groupie 'back in the van' well after last call.

The Loners

appearing on: pe4

The Loners are a two-piece garage combo whose punk rock brain and delta blues heart will leave you wondering why most five piece bands can't rock as hard. Born from the minds and bodies of Eddie Taylor and Chris Jones, the Loners lay down heavy beats and throw in a blend of blues, surf, and garage rock guitars to get the juices flowing. The Independent Weekly had to say, 'The Loners definitely do rock. If you haven't seen them yet, here's all you need to know: They have impeccable taste in music and write raw, stripped-down songs in the '60s punk tradition, which they proceed to gleefully rip into shreds.' PE agrees, and you will too. Let your freak flag fly, brother!

My Code Name Is Blue

appearing on: pe1

My Code Name Is Blue is Matt Brown's (co-founder of the Ashley Stove) solo project. In which, for the single on pe1, he enlisted Dan Carr (Preston School of industry) on bass and Jeff Palmer (Future farmer Records) on lap steel to form a song about lost love and waiting that will bash at your heart and tug at your wienus. For as funny and easy going as Matt can be, he can sure make you cry. Seriously folks, Matt is one of our generations best song writers - so pay attention!

Proof

appearing on: pe6

elsewhere: http://www.prooftheband.org/

This trio of established musicians (Mike Salmon and John Walker - Cole - and Greg Eyman - Goner and The Devil) is a thorough demonstration of what happens when people care about their craft. As their website explains, 'this project began at some point during the year 2000 . . . it was born out of a fascination with the patterns of sound and a desire to create art collectively with good friends.' Check them out, and find out for yourself what we mean when we say, 'the Proof is in the pudding.'

The Rosebuds

appearing on: pe3 | pe7

elsewhere: http://www.therosebuds.com/ | http://www.mergerecords.com/

If you haven't heard of the Rosebuds by now, you must be living under a rock, which is fine with us, as long as that's where you want to live. Their debut album, released by Merge Records (LP by yours trulies), has been a great success, garnering much critical acclaim. Their tunes are even being used on the Party of Five DVD! Keep your eyes peeled, and your ears to the ground, because the Rosebuds are on tour and they may just be playing in your town.

Ryan Pound

appearing on: pe1

Starting off as a one man act, Ryan Pound gave us some of the sweetest recordings we could have asked for. Then, as his live performances matured, he began inviting others to play with him. Within three months he had collected and formed his band, the Ready Set. It was with these folks that Ryan really began to get comfortable with the stage. Though currently on hiatus, the Ready Set is completing their album. We can't wait to hear it, and neither should you.

Strange

appearing on: pe9

elsewhere: http://www.thisisstrange.org/

Strange's approach to their music calls to mind a psychedelic danse macabre. The dense guitar work, backed by haunting synths, is as much a nod to some of the darker rock of the last twenty years as it is a wink in Nosferatu's direction. Their unique, creepy blend of rock will infect your headspace with inverted visions of sugarplum fairies and other such sweet, distorted imaginations.

Utah!

appearing on: pe3

elsewhere: http://utah-rock.com/ | http://www.bifocalmedia.com/ | http://www.team-av.com/

Utah! was formed in Michigan by Mickey D'Loughy and Eddie Pellino in 1998, they quickly became a four piece including voices, guitar, cello, drums, bass and/or baritone guitar. Having taken Kalamazoo by storm, toured internationally, and played with the likes of Guided by Voices, Enon, The Promise Ring, Ted Leo, and the Frogs, they decided to move south toward warmer weather. Upon moving to Raleigh, they again became a three piece and wrote all new material for just drums, cello, guitar, and voices. Utah's sound is sometimes described as the savage and unholy mix of a sweat stained fire-beast storming a medieval castle on the back of a mutant pony, with a soft jazz that will trick you in to thinking you are an educated and cultured individual. Look for their kickass new full length on Bi-Focal Media this fall.

The Weather

appearing on: pe4 | pe5

elsewhere: http://www.theweatherrocks.com/

Raleigh's own rock and roll wet dream. Some people say television meets the stones meets cheap trick, but we say it's honest rock and roll that forces you to remember why this shit was invented in the first place! As The Spectator magazine said, 'The Weather make[s] up one of the most intelligent and fun bands in the Triangle.'
